NBA Offseason Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers reportedly pursuing 7-foot-2 Utah Jazz center to support Luka-LeBron duo; missing piece for the team?
The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly considering a major roster shakeup in the upcoming free agency, with Austin Reaves potentially on the trading block. According to recent reports, the Lakers could target Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler, a rising star who could support Luka Doncic and LeBron James in their championship run.
The Los Angeles Lakers, despite their excitement over pairing Luka Doncic with LeBron James, have struggled to find a reliable replacement for Davis in the frontcourt. This has left the team with a noticeable gap in their lineup, particularly in defense and rebounding. Walker Kessler, a 7-foot-2 center, has emerged as a potential solution. Known for his clean footwork, reliable hands in pick-and-roll situations, and strong defensive instincts, Kessler has been a standout performer for the Jazz this season. He’s averaging 11.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game while shooting an impressive 72.5% from the field.

Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus recently highlighted Reaves as a key trade asset and suggested Walker Kessler as a viable target for the Los Angeles Lakers. "If the Lakers want to fill the void Davis left when he was shipped to the Dallas Mavericks last month, they should contact Kessler once free agency begins," Pincus noted. The Lakers had previously attempted to address their frontcourt issues by pursuing Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams, but the deal fell through due to Williams’ failed physical. This makes Kessler an even more appealing option for the team.

While Walker Kessler may not have the same level of experience or physical dominance as Davis, his two-way skill set could significantly bolster the Los Angeles Lakers’ frontcourt. His ability to anchor both offense and defense would provide much-needed stability for a team looking to maximize its championship window with LeBron James and Luka Doncic.

As the 2025-26 season approaches, the Lakers face a critical decision. Trading Austin Reaves, a fan favorite and a key contributor, would be a bold move. However, acquiring a player of Walker Kessler’s caliber could be the missing piece the Los Angeles Lakers need to compete at the highest level. The upcoming free agency period will be pivotal in determining whether the Lakers are willing to make such a gamble.
