Mick Schumacher eyes F1 comeback with Cadillac’s 2026 entry

Cadillac, backed by General Motors, is set to debut as the 11th team in Formula 1 in 2026. Rumors suggest Mick Schumacher, who left Haas after 2022, could lead. Schumacher, with 43 F1 starts, sees this as a crucial opportunity for a comeback despite past inconsistencies. Cadillac will initially use Ferrari engines before going independent by 2028.

For the first time since Haas entered Formula 1 in 2016, the sport is officially welcoming a new team. Cadillac, backed by General Motors, will make its long-awaited debut in 2026 as the grid’s 11th team, finally securing its place after a long and complicated process. Initially, F1 rejected an entry bid from Andretti despite FIA approval, but once Michael Andretti left the project, GM committed to bringing Cadillac in as a future works team. The American manufacturer will begin its journey as a Ferrari engine customer before developing its own power unit, with plans to go fully independent by 2028.
Now, with the team’s entry confirmed, the next big question is: who will be behind the wheel for Cadillac’s first season in F1? Among the rumored candidates is Mick Schumacher, who has expressed interest in returning to the grid. But he isn’t the only driver linked to the project.

Cadillac joins F1 in 2026 – Is Mick Schumacher the driver to lead them?

Mick Schumacher has not driven in Formula 1 since Haas dropped him after the 2022 season, but the 25-year-old still believes he has unfinished business in the sport. As soon as F1 confirmed in November that it had agreed a deal with General Motors to work towards joining the grid in 2026, Schumacher made it clear that a move to Cadillac is on his radar.

Schumacher told Speedweek about potentially joining Cadillac: “At this point, everything is an option.” After spending 2023 and 2024 as a Mercedes reserve driver and moving to Alpine’s WEC team for 2024 and 2025, he remains determined to return to F1. However, no team has given him the opportunity yet.
Part of the issue is that Schumacher’s reputation took a hit during his two seasons with Haas. He scored 12 career points in 2022, but costly crashes at the Monaco and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix—both of which split his car in half—raised concerns about his consistency. Mika Hakkinen has been vocal about this, stating that Schumacher “damaged” his reputation in F1. However, the two-time world champion also believes that Schumacher has the talent to return.
Schumacher himself feels he has a ‘score to settle’ in Formula 1. After 43 starts with Haas, he remains hungry to prove himself again.

With Cadillac entering F1 in 2026, Schumacher sees an opportunity to finally make his comeback. While no seat is confirmed yet, the German driver’s name is firmly in the conversation. If Cadillac believes in his potential, Schumacher could get the second chance he’s been waiting for.
