Sophomore Krishnav Chopraa, son of former India cricketer Nikhil Chopra, finished with a record-tying 16-under 200 to clinch the individual prize at the Big West Men's Golf Championship, which was played at the La Quinta Country Club. It meant the Long Beach State men's golf team won the title for a third straight time. It is a feat that had not been accomplished since 2003.
Individually for Chopra, the win tied him for the lowest tournament score at the Big West Championship alongside former Long Beach State golfer Ryan Panichpakdee from 2006.
Chopraa had scored of 63, 66 and 71 across the three rounds to post 9-under, 6-under and 1-under over the course of the competition.
Dylan Ma of the University of California Santa Barbara finished 9-under for a full seven stroke gap between the top two finishers.
After a career-low 63 in the first round, head coach Rob Murray had said, "Great play today from Krishnav in a bogey free 63. A career-low for him and the albatross on hole six was incredible! He carried us all day."
The 955th ranked Chopraa struggled at the start of the third round at the La Quinta Country Club. He posted three consecutive bogies before a par score on the front nine.
Chopraa, who has achieved a career-best 278th ranking in the world, didn't look back from then on as his sizeable lead continue to get better and bigger five double eagles on the next eight holes.
Who's that IPL player? The win will give Chopra a 224 place bump in the latest NCAA Rankings on the US Collegiate level.
On the team front, Long Beach State's Charlie Forster shot a 9-under 63 to propel the team into the lead and ultimately won by five strokes over Cal State Fullerton.
Their total score of 842 set a new Big West Championship record, surpassing the previous low of 845 set by UNLV in 1994.
